"The Devil's Lady"

1864 was the year of her birth,
Most all say she was spawned by the Devil's mirth,
She grew from childhood, tough and hard,
She'd take a man's fortune on the turn of a card!!!

The years were hard on this old gal we know,
But she just got harder as she continued to grow,
She smelled of sweat, powder, and bars,
And on her face she bore many scars!!!

Her scars came from all her men so tough,
But on them, she was twice as rough,
Many men died giving her those lines,
With cemetary stones she carved her designs!!!!

She's Cornish, Irish, Italian, and Scotch,
She's Welch, Greek, Serb, and Spanish a notch,
All of her children were sired from this blood,
To live in her beauty, and die in her mud!!!!

She attracted her men from near and from far,
There's many a good man bellied up to her bar,
After their shift at the Con, Spec, or High Ore,
The Original, Leonard, Calusa, and many more!!!

They worked hard by day, played hard by night,
It was nothing to see an occasional fight,
A man could always often find a taker,
And one would end up sometimes meeting his maker!!!

She's since grown softer in her golden age,
And calmed down considerably from her youthful rage,
She's now got churches and many schools to boot,
But she'll always have her houses of ill-repute!!!!!

Many good people have taken their root,
In this grand old lady, known as Butte,
And you know it's good when a miner tough and hard,
Greets you with....... "How's she going, Pard??"
