Roy Hickman died of ongoing and recent medical challenges on
March 14, 2017.   He was 77 years old.

      Roy was born in Butte, Montana on July 18, 1939.   He graduated from Butte High School.   After some college and basic training in the Army, he served the balance of his duty in the Reserves, working with a medical unit.

      Roy moved to Helena, and met and married Kay in 1962.   Roy worked for the State of Montana, Department of Labor and Industry for most of his career, and retired from his work after a final project to computerize and network all of the state’s unemployment offices.

      Roy enjoyed a variety of activities throughout his life.   Skiing golfing, bowling and pool were some of his favorites.   He received a National Ski Patrol number, and was on the ski patrol and the board of Belmont when the ski club managed the mountain.

      However, he was most sustained by his deep friendships.   Whether they be from high school, work, poker or pulmonary rehab, he grew and maintained a wide network of friends who he cared about and who cared about him.   In fact, he has been playing poker with many of the same men for over 55 years.   And he and Kay see their closest group of friends at least once a week for dinner.

      Roy was preceded in death by his son Kyle, as well as his mother Lucile, father Robert, and sister Donna.

      Roy is survived by Kay, his wife of 54 ½ years, his daughter, Kelly, his son-in-law Kurt, his brother Bob and his sister-in-law Marilyn as well as in-laws and nieces and nephews across the United States and Canada.   He is also survived and mourned by his “Motherlode” and poker friends.

      There will be no public services at Roy’s wishes.   Thank you to all who have visited and called, and thank you to the first responders who worked with Roy on Tuesday.   You are appreciated.   No need for memorials or flowers, but please tell someone you care about that you love them today.
