I received a B.A. degree in Liberal Arts (with high honors) from the University
of Montana in 1961, where I was student body president, and a J.D. degree from
Stanford Law School in 1964, where I was the Stanford Law Review’s managing
editor.   I was a law clerk at the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals in San
Francisco during 1964-65.

I was with the Lewis and Roca law firm in Phoenix during 1965-85, where I developed
a civil appellate practice.   I then practiced in my own civil appeals law
firm from 1985 until I retired in 2012.   I’m continuing to write articles
and speak concerning legal and other subjects.

I have three children and five grandchildren, who live in the Houston and Phoenix
areas.   I married Kathleen Smith in 1982.   Kathy was our law firm’s
administrator throughout its existence.   We’ve very much enjoyed our life
and travels together.   I’ve edited and contributed to books on Arizona and
Ninth Circuit practice.   I’ve also written numerous articles and have been
involved in many continuing legal education programs, particularly concerning
appellate practice and law office management topics. I’m now playing
clarinet in the Arizona Winds, a community concert band.
